An East Coast city man moves to the country, buys an acre property where the house is separated from the office by eighty, pathless vertical-feet. He loves his home and his office, but daily trips between the two are unpleasant.
Design Challenge
Link house and office; offer interesting gathering/stopping points; restore indigenous redwood/bay plant community; control stormwater runoff/erosion; provide privacy, lushness, and habitat for wildlife.

Design Solution
Develop steps along contours for easiest passage with resting/gathering places. Create a pond to act as a fire pond in the dry season, fill with winter rain runoff in the wet season, and offer birds and dragonflies drinks throughout the year. Vegetated swales direct, channel, and capture stormwater runoff. Maturing indigenous plants provide passive solar heating and cooling.
